Hello and welcome to the first (and probably last) great bass/DracO debate. I thought I'd throw this debate out into the public arena on account it effects everyone who plays, not just us bass/DracO mini-uber-claners. I have three reasons for this debate. Firstly I think everyone should stop and take a look at the issue, secondly, well, I love a good debate and thirdly, um, well, ok, there isn't a third, but still, it's something to do. So, without further ado...
To mod or not to mod? That is the question.
Speaking first for the "No to mods" team is me, yay...
ahem...<cough>
I say no to mods. Why, well, look at all the servers listed on the internet log in screen. Most of them are modded, some more then others. I have been to lots of them now, looking about to see what's out there. Most are empty. The busiest I have run into had 4 players on it.
Yes, I know GOI has moments too when it is empty. I have a screeny of it with just me on. It happened only once though and it was around 9 am on a weekday when most players were at school/work. And I hadn't had a shower yet and the BO was... well, anyway... I am yet to see very many players on any other server regardless of what time of the day or night I log in or how soon before hand I had showered. I believe this is due to players losing interest and going elsewhere or playing something else.
Since my time on Freelancer has been relatively short, about 4 months now I think, I can't say a whole lot about the history of it but from Oddball's notes and all the hundreds of conversations we had about it, GOI seems to have been always popular. TBK and others talk of being here since 2004. Why, what's the attraction? Perhaps it's because GOI has strong clans, strong members and a strong allegiance. Why is this then so? What does GOI offer that all the other servers do not?
Well, a low ping helps - lol. But what else? Obviously mods, or rather, the lack of them must be a contributing factor. They run a small thing that allows big money missions so the players don't have to spend all their time in the outer systems hunting for credits, and the bounty on other players is cool, but these are both a server side issue. I believe the battleship mod currently being tested is also a great benefit as it requires no modification at the client end. It has attracted RP already, which is another thing the other servers also seem to lack.
The Boston Mod was a mistake I believe. It required client side modding of Freelancer and opened up a potential threat of being banned after it had finished. A simple "I forgot to turn the mod off and I got banned" statement apparently isn't good enough to get you un-banned. If 1 million dollar missions are needed, why not simply adjust a couple of the missions from Westpoint or Leeds or New Berlin or from where ever the big missions run. One on the "good" side and one on the "dark" side perhaps.
<ding!> Oops, there's the bell. Ok, in closing, I'd like to say that GOI should say "NO" to any big mods. Why, cause it's a bad thing. Like drugs, they look good from the outside, might even be cool to play with, but eventually, like all drugs, they gonna kill ya.
