Planet New London, New London System. May 31th, 806AS 7:30am.
The Bretonian Parliament announced today that it would sell off two nearly complete battleships which had been ordered under the Defense Enhancement Act of 796AS. Admiral William Breakstone, who took over fleet development responsibilities last month, recommended the move. Admiral Breakstone would like to see the funds used for smaller, faster carriers and a modernized fighter force. "To combat the Corsair threat, we will need speed and flexibility. While heavy battleships are necessary for use as forward bases, additional such craft will not significantly enhance our defensive capability."
The system defense clan of New London--[DracO]--has brokered a deal for one of the battleships to be sold to their ally, Base and System services ([bass]). [bass] recently lost its home system to the Band of Brothers [BoB], and is in need of a mobile staging area. The leader of [bass], The Black Knight, refused to comment on the specific use for the battleship, except to say it would allow Base and System Services greater flexibility in operations.
When asked what the battleship would be named, The Black Knight responded that the name "bSS Rook" (bass Star Ship Rook) was being considered. ("bass Ship Rook" and "Ship of bass Rook" were rejected.) A fan of the ancient game of chess, the Knight cited the dual nature of the rook: "It is a castle, but it is also one of the most powerful and mobile pieces in the game."
The purchase price of the battleship was reportedly around 80% of it's construction cost. While the Bretonian Government lost money on the deal, they lost far less than if they had purchased a battleship superfluous to it's needs.
The fate of the second battleship is not yet known. However an anonymous source inside the Bretonian Government reports that clan [DracO] may consider purchasing the battleship for its own use if it cannot arrange for another buyer.
